Thank you to Deanna Clark, recent graduate who created this image for today’s celebration of Atlanta’s own Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
In this image, he waves to participants in the Civil Rights Movement’s “March on Washington” from the Lincoln Memorial. It was from this spot that he delivered his famous ‘I have a Dream’ speech on August 28, 1963. The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
